She is the second of four children of Gary Ward, a sugeron, and Claire, a nurse. Her older sister, Sophie is also a model, actress and she has twin brothers named Oscar and Henry. They grew up on the beach.

She was discovered in 2002, at the age of 14, while accompanying her friends to the Australian modelling competition. 

 

"I had come straight from my auntie and uncle's farm, and I was wearing a big gray barn jacket with mud all over it. When the scout came up to me, I said, 'No, thank you.'"

 

At the age of 16, she was selected by Anna Wintour (fashion editor) to be feature in the "It Girls" of the supermodel world.

She was the youngest model on the Vogue cover at age 16.

Since her childhood, Gemma has passion for acting and drama so she retired from modeling in 2008 to focus on her budding acting career, but returned to the runway at Milan Fashion Week 2014.

She had roles in several movies like The Great Gatsby (2013), Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides (2011), The Strangers (2008) and played in music videos as well: "M.I.L.F. $" by Fergie and "Daughters" by John Mayer.

She is a fan of Bob Marley.

Gemma was romantically linked to actor Heath Ledger shortly before he passed away. She met and later married to David Letts. They have a daughter Naia (born in 2013) and a son Jet Ocean (born in 2017).
