The former fashion model and actress is the daughter of computer specialist Hans-Heinrich and Maria-Theresa, a bank employee. She has a younger brother, Stefan. One of her grandmothers is told to be Polish.

She was brought up Roman Catholic and attended Catholic school.

Her mother sent her to student exchange programmes when she was a teenager to improve her English. As a child, she wanted to become a ballerina but a knee injury forced her to turn to modeling so moved to Paris. .

Despite her relatively short model career, she could be seen on advertisements of Yves Saint Laurent, Chanel, Armani, Dior, Burberry and Louis Vuitton; walked at runway shows such as Marc Jacobs, D&G as well as appeared on the cover of Vogue Paris, Marie Claire and Cosmopolitan. Soon she decided to start an acting career at the urging of director Luc Besson.

she is the global spokesperson of ‘L’Oreal’, the face of Calvin Klein’s fragrance ‘Beauty and a brand ambassador for Swiss watch manufacturer Jaeger-LeCoultre.

Her most famous role was Helen in Troy (2004), where she had to gain 7 kilograms to appear curvier. You could see her in Quentin Tarantino's war film Inglourious Basterds (2009), Wicker Park (2004), The Host (2013) and many others. Shhe made her German-language debut in Fatih Akin's In the Fade (2017), for which she won the Cannes Film Festival Award for Best Actress and Satellite Award for Best Actress.

Diane has German, French and American citizenship.

She was a friend of fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld and really loves Gwen Stefani for her style.

Diane is an excellent joke teller and loves wine.

She is fluent in German, English, and French as well. 

She was married to director Guillaume Canet, but they divorced. She dated actor Joshua Jackson for 10 years. Since 2016 she is in relationship with Norman Reedus and they have a daughter.
