The actress and former model was born in a rural area to Dennis and Elaine Helfer. She is of German, English, Swedish and Norwegian descent. Tricia lived and worked on the family's grain farm with her three sisters: Trina, Tammy, and Tara.

She was discovered at age 17 by a modeling agency scout while standing in line at a local movie theatre.

In 1992 she won Ford Models' Supermodel of the World contest. Before she retired from fashion modelling in 2002 she had appeared in ad campaigns for Ralph Lauren, Versace, Chanel, and Giorgio Armani and walked for top fashion shows, such as Carolina Herrera, Christian Dior, Givenchy, John Galliano, and Dolce & Gabbana. Tricia has appeared on the covers of Flare, Amica, ELLE, Cosmopolitan, Marie Claire, and Vogue, and even Playboy among others.

She is best known for playing the humanoid Cylon model Number Six in Battlestar Galactica series (2004–2009) and Charlotte Richards / Mom in the FOX series Lucifer (2016–). She has appeared in lot of other TV series such as Two and a half men, CSI and S.W.A.T. or in video games like Mortal Kombat X and Halo 3: ODST.

She has  artificial discs in her back and  in her neck, resulting from an incident in which a piece of luggage was dropped on her head while sitting on a  airliner.

She co-founded the charity web site "Acting Outlaws" with Katee Sackhoff and is also involved in various causes, from animal rescue to the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.

Tricia adores cats.

She briefly dated Sylvester Stallone when she was younger but got married to lawyer Jonathan Marshall in 2003 but divorced in 2017. Tricia doesn't have any children.
