Her father, Eric is of West Indian and African ancestry and works as and accountant. Her mother Betzaida Rodríguez, is a social worker is Puerto Rican and has Spanish and Indian (South Asian) heritage. She has two sisters.

Joan graduated magna cum laude with a Bacherlor's degree in psychology.

She was discovered as a teen while shopping with her family in Hatillo but she had to correct her teeth in order to succeed.

She was selected as the first Latina to become a spokeswoman for Estee Lauder.

Her favorite song is 'Clique' by Kanye West, Jay-Z and Big Sean. She also enjoys working out and going to movies by herself.

She has a cat, Mr Grey but once she would like to spend some time with tigers and lions and maybe to pet a cub. Above these she would go skydiving.

In 2018, she starred in the Netflix original movie Set It Up, in John Wick: Chapter 2 (2017) but before she has appeared in Ricky Martin's music video, "It's Alright" and in Beyoncé's "Yoncé" among others.

In addition to her passion for fashion, Joan is involved with a non-profit organization called Project Sunshine, where she helps children with medical needs.

She has been dating entrepreneur Bernard Smith since 2011.
