Jessica grew up on a farm alongside her six brothers. She came from a religious family and attended Sacred Heart High School in Ontario. Her original intention was to become a dentist.

She was discovered in a coffee shop when was on her way back from Canada's Wonderland (a theme park). Her parents encouraged her to grab hold of the exciting prospect with both hands.

Jessica became Photographer Steven Meisel's muse who casted her in every advertisement campaign of his.

The Wall Street Journal featured Jessica Stam in their article on “How to Walk Like a Model” and taught a DKNY intern her runway moves however once she fell at the Chloé Fall 2006 show in Paris. It received millions of views on YouTube and took first spot on the “Top Five Runway Falls" list by New York Magazine.

Fashion designer Marc Jacobs created The Marc Jacobs Stam, a bag inspired and named after her.

She is placed on a list of "Industry Icons" by models.com. Besides modelling she guest starred in Season 1, episode 4 of CW's The Beautiful Life.

 

She partnered with Many Hopes and Adopt Together to help foster kids in the US and street kids in coastal Kenya.

She used to smoke. Some forums claim that she has or had drug problems (cocaine).

She has dated then-New York Rangers hockey player Aaron Voros, Anthony Kiedis of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Malcolm Ford and DJ AM. In 2017 she gave birth to a baby girl. She's never revealed her daughter's name and the child's father is unknown, although she appears to be dating film director Brahman Turner.

"With modeling, you are judged on your looks," she says. "It's easy to take that personally. But you have to realise that it's only your appearance that's being judged, not you as a whole. If you didn't, you'd be destroyed."
